Upcoming Workshops

This workshop covers three types of binding and the three main techniques of book binding: folding, sewing and gluing. With all materials provided, participants will make a pamphlet-stitched book, a stab bound book and a soft cover coptic bound book.
With these skills, participants will be able to make each book at home independently. No experience is required at all.

This is a two day workshop that results in a custom made book that is A4 or A3 sized. On day one each participant learns how to edit, sequence and design their work, creating a print-ready file. On day two, participants refine their design, create a cover, then print on site and bind their work. Excellent for people who have never made a book, or who are wanting to make something a bit special and explore their work. Soft cover or hard cover are available, as are slip cases. Binding styles are stab binding (A3 or A4 size), coptic binding (a4 size), pamphlet stitch (A4 size). Custom styles can be explored, within reason. No previous experience is necessary.
Please note, book length is strictly limited to 48 pages. If you'd like to make a longer book, consider our small artist book workshop where books up to 72 pages can be created on site.

In this two day workshop (February 21+22), six participants will learn about publishing a book while making a short A5 book. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a detailed overview of why and how an artist can publish a book. We'll look at a process to go from having work to having a book, learn about budgeting, printing, design and working with publishers. All you need is existing art (any visual art or writing) and a notebook. Everything else provided. Our best option for someone who has been working on something for a while and wants to learn a lot about how it could live as a publication.
Workshop runs 10-3 Saturday and Sunday.

This workshop is taught online and is open to participants from anywhere in the world. In part one of the workshop, participants will attend an online workshop that covers the publishing industry, examining ten case studies of books that succeeded and a few that didn't go quite as far as they could. With a focus on the practicalities of book making, including working with publishers, self-publishing, budgeting, launching and knowing how many to make, this workshop is our most business forward and direct.
The second part of the workshop is a one-on-one video call with Matt Dunne, where participants can ask follow up questions, ask for advice for their work, and receive specific, actionable feedback for making their work into a book.
It is limited to six participants. The group workshop takes place on March 17, 6.30-9.30PM Australian Eastern Standard Time.

This workshop offers significant creative exploration of book making, with participants being able to use a variety of cover types, book sizes, lengths and binding types to create something unique and beautiful.
No existing knowledge of book making, design or binding is required. We have had numerous beginners come to this workshop and leave with a gorgeous book.
Limited to six spaces for lots of individual instruction.

In this one day workshop, participants will make an A5 zine. This will involve a very energetic and fun day of editing, sequencing, printing and basic binding. A really fun introduction for folks who want to try making something with their art work or writing but aren't ready to commit to a longer workshop. While the book making workshops are a little more serious, in this workshop we encourage play, craft and experimentation, and engage with the more lo-fi and joyful history of zine creation.

"I was blown away by how much I learned about bookbinding and publishing, far more than I expected! Matt was incredibly attentive, enthusiastic, and truly inspiring throughout the whole experience. The workshop was well organised and thoughtfully designed, and thanks to Matt’s deep expertise in publishing, I gained invaluable insights that I’ll carry with me moving forward. Highly recommended!"
"Matt's approach to also bring together everyone and compliment each person’s project was really people-centred and caring, which can sometimes be lost in workshops / small education programs. I’m feeling actually more energised by my practice after so long being lost."
"A fulfilling weekend adventure inside the world of photo bookmaking and publishing. Generous, exploratory and fun."
"I found the book making workshop really accessible, and enjoyed the hands-on aspect. It helped me understand the publishing process a bit better, and that you don’t need to have super-expensive resources to produce shareable works. Matt is a great facilitator too, whose advice on sequencing and editing alone was invaluable."
"I enjoyed learning about Matt's artistic practice and how he worked his projects into book format. I also loved looking through his personal collection of photo books, and experimenting with different binding techniques and papers, I could happily participate in this workshop multiple times because of how much there is to explore."
